Hiring a plumber in Astoria: what Astoria homes run into

Astoria is a mix of 1920s brick two-families, attached row houses, pre-war walk-ups and newer condo buildings near the waterfront. Each comes with its own plumbing quirks, and knowing which one you live in makes the call to a plumber faster and cheaper.

Renting? Repairs to building plumbing, wiring and windows are normally the landlord's job. Tell your landlord or super in writing first, and use 311 if it isn't handled. Our matching is for owners, landlords and small businesses.

Emergency? Gas smell, CO alarm, fire, sparking or flooding: get to safety and call 911 first.

Common plumbing calls in Astoria homes

  • Two-family houses: old galvanized supply pipes that clog with rust (low pressure at upstairs fixtures is a classic sign), and cast-iron drain stacks that crack with age.
  • Basement drains and the house trap: many older Queens houses have a U-shaped house trap near the front wall of the basement. When it clogs, every drain in the house slows down at once.
  • Water heaters in the basement that are at the end of their life.
  • Newer condos: failed supply lines, washer hoses and shower valves, often leaking into the unit below.

Who can do the work

In New York City, plumbing and gas piping work is reserved for a DOB Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) or someone working under one. For real emergencies, an LMP can file an Emergency Work Notification with the Department of Buildings and start right away, then file the permit paperwork afterward. You can check a plumber's license yourself on the DOB NOW Public Portal (search "Licensee"). See our license lookup guide.

Owner, landlord or condo?

If you own a two-family and rent out the other floor, you're the landlord, and plumbing that affects the tenant's water, heat or hot water is your responsibility. In a condo, the building usually owns the risers and main lines, while fixtures and branch lines inside your unit are usually yours. Check your bylaws, and tell the managing agent before any work starts. See who fixes what.

What to ask on the phone

  • Are you (or the company) a NYC Licensed Master Plumber? What's the license number?
  • How is the visit billed: a flat call-out fee, hourly, or a quote after diagnosis? Is there an after-hours rate?
  • When can you realistically get here?
  • Co-op or condo: can you send a certificate of insurance (COI) to my building today?

Get the price structure in writing (a text or email is fine) before work starts. Rates vary a lot by time of day and the problem, so we don't quote prices here.

Gas in Astoria

Parts of Queens get gas from Con Edison and others from National Grid, so check your bill and save the right emergency number. If you ever smell gas, leave first and call 911 or the utility from outside. Gas piping work needs a Licensed Master Plumber.

Questions

Why is my water pressure low only upstairs?

In older Astoria houses it's often corroded galvanized supply pipe. A licensed plumber can confirm it and quote repiping the affected runs.

What is a house trap?

A U-shaped fitting on the main drain, usually near the basement's front wall, with one or two cleanout plugs. A clog there backs up every drain in the house.

Do I need a licensed plumber in Queens?

Yes. NYC requires plumbing and gas work to be done by or under a DOB Licensed Master Plumber.
