Need an emergency plumber in Queens? Do this first
Most Queens plumbing emergencies are a race against water: a split pipe in the basement, a supply line that let go under a sink, a toilet that won't stop. The first ten minutes matter more than who you call. Here's what to do, and how to hire the right person in NYC.

Emergency? Gas smell, CO alarm, fire, sparking or flooding: get to safety and call 911 first.
Stop the water in the first few minutes
- Close the nearest fixture valve (under the sink or behind the toilet) if the leak is at one fixture.
- If not, close the main shutoff. In most Queens houses it's in the basement or crawl space where the water line comes through the front wall, next to the water meter. Turn it clockwise. Learn where yours is before you need it.
- If water is near outlets, a panel or appliances, don't walk through it. Turn off power at the panel only if you can reach it while standing somewhere dry; otherwise wait for help.
- Open a low faucet to drain pressure out of the lines, move valuables, and take photos and video for insurance.
Who you can hire for plumbing in NYC
In New York City, plumbing and gas piping repairs are reserved for a DOB Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) or someone working under one. A general handyman can't legally do that work. For true emergencies, an LMP can file an Emergency Work Notification with the Department of Buildings and start repairs before the permit is issued, then file the permit paperwork afterward. That's normal, and it means you don't have to wait days for a permit while water is running.
You can confirm a plumber's license and insurance status yourself on the DOB NOW Public Portal (search "Licensee"). See our license lookup guide.
What to ask on the phone
- Are you (or the company) a NYC Licensed Master Plumber? What's the license number?
- How is the emergency visit billed: a flat call-out fee, hourly, or a quote after diagnosis? Is there an after-hours rate?
- When can you realistically be here?
- If I'm in a co-op or condo, can you send a certificate of insurance (COI) to my building today?
Get the price structure in writing (a text is fine) before anyone starts. Rates vary a lot by time of day and the type of problem, so we don't quote prices here.
Queens specifics
Much of Queens is detached and semi-attached houses (Bayside, Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Middle Village, the Rockaways), where the owner is responsible for the private water service line, the sewer service line and the main valve. If DEP finds a problem in your private sewer line, the repair is yours and must be done by an LMP. Gas in Queens comes from either Con Edison or National Grid depending on the neighborhood, so check your bill and keep the right emergency number handy.
Questions
Can a handyman fix a burst pipe in NYC?
No. Plumbing and gas piping repairs in New York City must be done by a DOB Licensed Master Plumber or someone working under that license. A handyman can help with cleanup or drywall afterward.
Does an emergency plumber need a permit before starting?
For true emergencies, a Licensed Master Plumber can file an Emergency Work Notification with DOB and start right away, then file the follow-up Limited Alteration Application. You don't have to wait for a permit while water is running.
Where is the main water shutoff in a Queens house?
Usually in the basement or crawl space near the front wall, where the water service enters, beside the water meter. Turn it clockwise to close it.
