How to check a contractor's license in NYC, step by step

Two different city agencies license the people who work on NYC homes. Knowing which one to check takes about two minutes and protects you if something goes wrong. Here's the map.

Emergency? Gas smell, CO alarm, fire, sparking or flooding: get to safety and call 911 first.

Which license does the job need?

  • General repairs and renovation (carpentry, drywall, roofing, gutters, windows, flooring, kitchens and baths) costing more than $200: a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license.
  • Plumbing and gas piping: a DOB Licensed Master Plumber. DCWP notes that home improvement work doesn't include plumbing.
  • Electrical: a DOB licensed master electrician. Purely electrical work isn't home improvement work either.
  • Locksmiths: licensed by DCWP (moving to a business license on May 31, 2027).
  • Painting only: NYC's home improvement definition excludes painting and decorating that isn't related to other improvement work.

Check a DCWP license (home improvement, locksmith)

  1. Go to the DCWP license search. No account needed. You can also call 311.
  2. Search by business name or DCWP license number.
  3. Confirm it's active and that the name matches the company you're signing with.
  4. For complaint history, call 311 and say "Business Background Check."

Why it matters: if a DCWP-licensed home improvement contractor owes you money, you may be eligible for reimbursement from the Home Improvement Contractor Trust Fund. With an unlicensed contractor, you're not.

Check a DOB license (plumber, electrician)

  1. Go to the DOB NOW Public Portal and choose Licensee. The search includes both DOB NOW and older BIS records.
  2. Search by last name, business name or license number, and pick the license type.
  3. Check the license status and the insurance information shown.
  4. DOB also offers a "Know Your Construction Professional" directory with disciplinary records.

Other red flags

  • No written estimate, or a refusal to put the price and scope in writing. DCWP says licensed home improvement contractors must give you a written estimate if you ask.
  • A large cash deposit demanded up front.
  • "We don't need a permit" for gas, electrical or structural work.
  • A license number that belongs to a different company name.

Our pro signup asks businesses for their license details, but you should always verify a license yourself before work starts.
