Emergency plumber in the Bronx: what to do before help arrives

Many Bronx owners have a two- or three-family house or a small multifamily building with tenants upstairs, so a plumbing emergency often affects more than one household. The steps below help you limit damage and hire the right licensed pro.

Renting? Repairs to building plumbing, wiring and windows are normally the landlord's job. Tell your landlord or super in writing first, and use 311 if it isn't handled. Our matching is for owners, landlords and small businesses.

Emergency? Gas smell, CO alarm, fire, sparking or flooding: get to safety and call 911 first.

First five minutes

  1. Close the nearest fixture valve if the leak is at a sink, toilet or appliance.
  2. If not, close the main shutoff, usually in the basement near the front wall by the water meter.
  3. If water is reaching electrical equipment, keep clear and shut power only from a dry spot.
  4. Tell tenants on other floors what's happening, and ask them to stop running water if the leak is in a shared riser or drain.
  5. Photograph everything for insurance.

Who can do plumbing work in NYC

In New York City, plumbing and gas piping work is reserved for a DOB Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) or someone working under one. For real emergencies, an LMP can file an Emergency Work Notification with the Department of Buildings and start right away, then file the permit paperwork afterward. You can check a plumber's license yourself on the DOB NOW Public Portal (search "Licensee"). See our license lookup guide.

What to ask on the phone

  • Are you (or the company) a NYC Licensed Master Plumber? What's the license number?
  • How is the visit billed: a flat call-out fee, hourly, or a quote after diagnosis? Is there an after-hours rate?
  • When can you realistically get here?
  • Co-op or condo: can you send a certificate of insurance (COI) to my building today?

Get the price structure in writing (a text or email is fine) before work starts. Rates vary a lot by time of day and the problem, so we don't quote prices here.

Bronx specifics: gas and tenants

Gas in the Bronx is supplied by Con Edison (emergency line 1-800-752-6633). If you smell gas, get everyone out and call 911 or Con Ed from outside. If the utility shuts off gas because of a leak in building piping, a Licensed Master Plumber has to repair it and handle the DOB steps before service is restored. See our gas shutoff guide. If you're a landlord, remember that NYC requires owners to provide hot water year-round and heat during heat season, so plumbing outages that affect tenants are urgent.

Questions

Who is the gas utility in the Bronx?

Con Edison. Its gas emergency line is 1-800-752-6633, and you can also call 911.

Can my super fix a leak in a Bronx building?

A super can shut valves and do basic maintenance, but plumbing repairs and alterations in NYC must be done by or under a DOB Licensed Master Plumber.

How fast can I get a plumber?

It depends on the time of day and the business. Ask for a realistic arrival time and the billing structure in writing before work starts.
