Typical Queens handyman jobs

  • Door, cabinet and drawer repairs; new hardware and locks.

  • Mounting TVs, mirrors, shelves and blinds.

What needs a license in NYC

If a handyman job is a repair, remodel or improvement to your home and costs more than $200, NYC requires the business to hold a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license, and you should get a written contract listing the work, materials, dates and payment schedule. Plumbing and gas work need a DOB Licensed Master Plumber; electrical work needs a DOB Licensed Master Electrician. You can check a DCWP license on the city's license search.

Co-ops and condos in Queens

Most Queens co-op and condo buildings require a certificate of insurance (COI) from any contractor before they can work in your unit, and bigger jobs may need an alteration agreement. Ask your managing agent for the requirements first and send them to the pro when you book. See our COI guide.

  1. List every job with photos and rough measurements.
  2. Mention the wall type if you know it (plaster, brick, drywall).
  3. Say whether you're supplying materials.
  4. Ask whether it's priced by the job or by the hour, in writing.
