Gutter cleaning in Staten Island: a fall checklist for homeowners

Staten Island has more trees and more detached houses than most of the city, which means a lot of gutters full of leaves every fall. Clogged gutters overflow against the foundation, rot fascia boards and can push water into basements. Here's what to look for and how to get it done safely.

Renting? Repairs to building plumbing, wiring and windows are normally the landlord's job. Tell your landlord or super in writing first, and use 311 if it isn't handled. Our matching is for owners, landlords and small businesses.

Emergency? Gas smell, CO alarm, fire, sparking or flooding: get to safety and call 911 first.

Signs your gutters need attention

  • Water sheeting over the edge in rain instead of coming out the downspout.
  • Plants or moss growing in the gutter.
  • Sagging sections, or gutters pulling away from the fascia.
  • Stains or peeling paint on siding under the gutters.
  • Water pooling against the foundation, or a damp basement after storms.

Timing

The usual rhythm for tree-heavy streets is once after the leaves finish dropping in late fall, and again in spring. Houses under big oaks, maples or pines may need more. Clearing before hard freezes helps keep water from backing up and freezing along the roof edge.

DIY safety

  • Use a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground, with someone holding it. Don't lean it on the gutter itself.
  • Stay off the roof of a two-story house unless you have proper fall protection.
  • Watch for the overhead electrical service line where it reaches the house.
  • If it's above one story, or you're not comfortable on a ladder, hire it out.

Downspouts and your sewer

DEP notes that on most houses, downspouts lead directly into the sewer system. If you install a backwater valve to prevent sewer backups, DEP says the downspouts need to be disconnected and redirected, or roof water can back up into the house. If your basement takes water in storms, ask the pro where your downspouts go. See also our sewer backup guide.

What to ask a gutter pro

  • Is debris bagged and hauled away, or left in the yard?
  • Do you flush the downspouts and check that they drain?
  • Will you send photos of anything loose, sagging or rotted?
  • For repairs or new gutters over $200: what's your DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license number?

Questions

How often should Staten Island gutters be cleaned?

Usually once in late fall after the leaves drop, and again in spring. Homes under heavy tree cover may need more.

Can clogged gutters cause basement water?

Yes. Overflowing gutters dump water against the foundation, and that can seep into basements.

Do gutter installers need a license in NYC?

Gutter repair or replacement on a home is home improvement work. For jobs over $200, ask for a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license.
